The club founder whose vision, dedication and community service shaped the Engadine Dragons.
After serving his country in World War II, Barry McManus moved to Engadine in 1948. His experiences during the war and his commitment to community service would shape his approach to building a better future for the local youth.
Recognizing the need for organized sports for local youth, Barry and his wife Ada established the Engadine Dragons. Their vision was to provide opportunities for young people to participate in rugby league while developing character, discipline, and community spirit.
Barry served as the club's President for both Cricket and Rugby League from 1959 to 1963, demonstrating his commitment to both sports and the broader community. His leadership during these formative years was instrumental in establishing the club's values and traditions.
Barry's contributions were recognized with life membership by both the Engadine Dragons Cricket Club and Rugby League Club. He also held various positions in the Sutherland Shire division of the St. George Junior Rugby League and the Cronulla-Sutherland Junior League, earning life memberships for his outstanding service.
Beyond sports, Barry was deeply involved with the RSL movement, holding multiple life memberships and serving as President of various RSL bodies. His commitment to veterans and the broader community extended far beyond the sporting field.
Barry McManus's legacy lives on through the Engadine Dragons Junior Rugby League Football Club. His vision of providing opportunities for young people through sport continues to guide the club's mission today. The values of community service, dedication, and commitment that he embodied remain central to the club's identity.
